Malaysia Enhances El Niño Preparedness for Upcoming Dry Season

    July 20, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia has ramped up efforts ahead of expected hotter and drier conditions as El Niño gains strength across the Pacific. The Alliance for a Safe Community issued a call for proactive measures to safeguard water resources, public health, agriculture, and fragile ecosystems. Chairman Lee Lam Thye emphasized the importance of coordination among government agencies, businesses, and local communities. He stated that prompt actions could alleviate pressure on critical services during extended periods of high temperatures and scarce rainfall.

Malaysia steps up El Niño response for dry months
Early El Niño action focuses on water security, heat safety and haze prevention.

According to MetMalaysia’s July 14 update, moderate El Niño conditions are currently present. The agency forecasts the climate pattern to persist until at least April 2027. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region are currently 1.3 degrees Celsius above average. Additionally, MetMalaysia predicts more intense conditions from October through December 2026, with forecasts suggesting the event could reach very strong levels during this timeframe.

The seasonal weather outlook for Malaysia indicates reduced rainfall in several areas during the latter half of 2026. The most significant decrease is anticipated in July and August, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Regions such as southern Peninsular Malaysia, parts of Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are expected to experience lower-than-normal rainfall. Drier conditions could heighten the risk of wildfires and haze, especially when open burning is practiced. However, heavy rain and thunderstorms remain possible during the monsoon season.

    Prioritizing Water Security

The National Disaster Management Agency has expanded its initiatives to address hot and dry weather conditions. Since February, authorities have conducted seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights over Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Three additional cloud seeding campaigns are planned to support rainfall and reservoir replenishment. Fire and environmental teams have been instructed to monitor 83 sites with high open-burning risk. These actions are part of the government’s comprehensive response to El Niño.

Water authorities are tasked with inspecting dams requiring urgent repairs and exploring new groundwater sources for tube wells. Health and education sectors are enhancing public advisories for schools and vulnerable groups. The water safety alliance recommends reducing losses from aging pipelines and increasing storage capacity. Additional measures include promoting efficient irrigation, providing technical support to farmers, and enforcing stricter regulations against forest and peatland fires. Continuous monitoring of water reserves and agricultural health remains a priority.

    Expanding Public Health Advisory Efforts

Lee Lam Thye highlighted that seniors, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses are among the most vulnerable groups. He urged the dissemination of wider public information on conserving water, staying safe in extreme heat, and preventing fires. Residents are encouraged to utilize the myCuaca app for localized weather forecasts, alerts, and official updates. Authorities also monitor air quality, drought levels, fire risks, and temperature trends. Schools and workplaces can leverage this data to make informed safety decisions daily.

The latest international climate assessment indicates a 97% probability that El Niño will persist into early 2027. It also estimates an 81% chance of a very strong event occurring from October through December. Malaysia’s current preparations encompass water management strategies, cloud seeding activities, public health messaging, fire risk mitigation, and weather monitoring. The government continues to coordinate these efforts through national and state agencies, urging the public to stay informed through verified sources and to conserve water during dry spells.
