Michigan Confirms Two Fatalities in Large-Scale Cyclospora Outbreak

    August 4, 2026

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan has verified two deaths linked to its 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities reported by the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. Through July 30, it also documented 193 hospitalizations. Medical records indicated both individuals had significant underlying health issues that may have been affected by cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Officials noted they will not disclose additional details about the two patients.

Michigan outbreak update confirms two cyclospora deaths
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak.

The two individuals fell ill prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall that was announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on Aug. 3. They described these as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving persons with pre-existing health conditions. The total cases reported by Michigan include all during the investigation and are subject to revision. Federal surveillance data, which typically includes laboratory-confirmed cases, may differ from the state’s count that also considers probable cases.

Federal authorities are also probing a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, nine states had reported 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom also reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 people required hospitalization according to federal data. The illness onset dates ranged from June 22 through July 20. The CDC later recognized Michigan’s two deaths, which had not been included in the detailed federal totals released on July 24.

Recall targets iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico

Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall covered various food-service products and Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at selected Walmart locations. Use-by dates for the recalled products ranged from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed affected lettuce to 27 states through food-service channels. Taco Bell ceased using lettuce from the supplier on July 17.

Michigan officials have not linked every case across states directly to the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services indicated that lettuce or salad greens remain a potential source. However, the agency has not identified a single product, grower, or supplier for the entire outbreak. Other food items could not be fully ruled out from the ongoing investigation. The federal outbreak associated with lettuce represents only a portion of the cyclosporiasis activity reported nationwide.

Symptoms Can Linger Without Proper Treatment

Cyclosporiasis, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, results in intestinal illness. Infection occurs after consuming contaminated food or water. Typical symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Usually, symptoms start about a week after exposure, though timing can vary. If left untreated, the illness can last longer than a month, with symptoms sometimes subsiding only to return later.

Health officials advise consumers to discard any recalled iceberg lettuce still in their possession. It is recommended to throw away the product or return it to the point of purchase. Surfaces and containers that came into contact with the recalled lettuce should also be cleaned. Anyone experiencing symptoms should see a healthcare provider, particularly if they have eaten iceberg lettuce within the past two weeks. Michigan continues to update case counts as investigations by local and state health departments proceed.
