Major India-Russia Engagement Highlights Modi-Putin Discussions at SCO Summit

    September 2, 2026

BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit held in Bishkek. The August 31 session addressed topics including political relations, commerce, defense, energy, space exploration, mobility, and interpersonal exchanges. The leaders also explored regional conflicts and avenues for cooperation through prominent multilateral platforms. This meeting marked their first face-to-face encounter of 2026 and continued a pattern of high-level diplomatic interactions between India and Russia.

India-Russia ties lead Modi-Putin talks at SCO summit
Modi and Putin discuss India-Russia ties during high-level talks in Bishkek.

Their previous interaction took place in New Delhi at the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December 2025. The recent discussions evaluated the progress made under the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership that underpins bilateral ties. India and Russia uphold a wide-ranging partnership in sectors such as energy supply, defense, technology, and space. Both nations have also worked to expand trade and investment, tackling logistics issues, payment mechanisms, and other barriers to commercial cooperation.

Modi and Putin expressed approval of the results from the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. The commission convened in Moscow on August 24, just prior to the Bishkek summit. The two countries have committed to achieving $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. Official data from India indicate bilateral trade reached $59.86 billion during the 2025-26 fiscal year, with Russian exports to India constituting the majority of the total.

Dialogue and diplomacy continue to be vital in conflict resolution efforts

Regional security was a key focus of the discussion as the leaders exchanged perspectives on conflicts impacting West Asia and the Black Sea region. India highlighted that these conflicts have disrupted maritime trade routes and posed risks to Indian seafarers. Modi reaffirmed that dialogue and diplomacy should remain the main approach for settling disputes. During his remarks with Putin, he also emphasized the need to end prolonged warfare and reiterated India’s support for peace initiatives.

The discussion extended to their countries’ involvement in BRICS, which India is set to chair in 2026. Modi informed Putin that India eagerly anticipates welcoming him for the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13. This event will serve as another platform for India and Russia to engage with other BRICS members. Their Bishkek meeting occurred less than two weeks before the summit in India and followed numerous bilateral meetings over the past year.

India and Russia reaffirm their strategic alliance

Modi and Putin committed to maintaining active engagement as both nations seek to deepen their bilateral relationship. According to India’s Prime Minister’s Office, the partnership has continued to grow despite broader geopolitical uncertainties. Cooperation covers established sectors such as defense, nuclear energy, and space, as well as trade, fertilizers, innovation, and mobility. Energy remains a significant aspect of their economic ties, and both sides are working through government-led initiatives aimed at broadening economic cooperation beyond current areas.

The Bishkek summit underscored the importance of bilateral economic collaboration alongside international conflict issues within the diplomatic agenda. It also reinforced ongoing dialogue between Modi and Putin ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit in India. Their talks covered regional concerns, long-term trade objectives, and cooperation within international institutions. With the September summit nearing, the focus remains on expanding tangible cooperation while keeping channels open for discussions on conflicts that influence trade, security, and citizens abroad.
