Egypt’s Foreign Reserves Surpass $55 Billion for the First Time in June

    July 16, 2026

CAIRO / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves increased to an estimated $55.0723 billion at the end of June 2026. This marks the first time reserves have exceeded $55 billion, setting a new record. The Central Bank of Egypt announced this figure on July 8. Reserves grew from $53.1342 billion at the close of May, representing a monthly rise of approximately $1.94 billion, or about 3.6%, the largest increase in the first half of the year.

Egypt foreign reserves reach record $55.07 billion in June
Egypt recorded six consecutive monthly increases in net international reserves.

At the end of December 2025, reserves stood at $51.4516 billion. They then increased to $52.5938 billion in January and to $52.7455 billion in February. March closed at $52.8306 billion, while April’s end-of-month total was $53.0092 billion. In May, reserves reached $53.1342 billion before the notable June jump. Official monthly data indicate that Egypt’s foreign reserves rose every month during the first half of 2026.

Compared to December, June reserves increased by roughly $3.62 billion, or just over 7%. In January, the central bank reported that reserves covered about 6.3 months of merchandise imports. The June data did not specify an updated import coverage ratio nor did it detail the sources behind the monthly reserve increases. The bank classified the June figure as provisional and reported it in millions of US dollars.

    Reserve growth accelerates in June

Data from the central bank revealed that remittances totaled $39.2 billion from July 2025 through April 2026, representing a 33.2% increase from $29.4 billion during the same period the previous year. In April alone, remittances reached approximately $4.3 billion, with monthly totals increasing by 44% from about $3 billion in April 2025. The published reports did not directly link these remittance figures to the June rise in Egypt’s net international reserves.

Egypt’s current account deficit was $5.1 billion in the January-March 2026 quarter, up from $2.3 billion during the same period a year earlier. Higher remittances, tourism income, and Suez Canal revenues partially offset a broader trade deficit. Net foreign direct investment inflows totaled $3.7 billion, compared to $3.8 billion a year prior. These external account figures do not specify the components behind the June reserve increase.

External accounts support the record reserve level

On June 29, the International Monetary Fund and Egyptian officials reached a staff-level agreement on the country’s seventh program review. The agreement also included the second review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. IMF staff noted that gross international reserves remained generally stable as of the end of March. The June net reserve figure was released after these review discussions and represents the latest confirmed monthly data published by Egypt’s monetary authorities.

June marked the end of the first half with reserves surpassing all previous monthly levels reported by the Central Bank of Egypt. The $55.0723 billion total exceeded May’s reserves by nearly $2 billion and was over $3.6 billion higher than December 2025’s figure. The official data show a pattern of gradual monthly increases leading up to the significant jump in June. The central bank did not specify the reasons for this increase, making the record reserve figure the primary highlighted development in the announcement.
