US and Iraq Broaden Economic and Energy Collaboration

    July 15, 2026

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – U.S. President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi convened at the White House on Tuesday to discuss expanded economic and energy cooperation. The talks centered on American investment, oil output, natural gas development, and electricity infrastructure projects. Trump expressed that the United States anticipates engaging in numerous commercial agreements with Iraq and indicated that American companies would play a leading role in Iraqi oil initiatives. No final project values, commercial terms, or implementation timelines were disclosed by either government following the discussions.

Al-Zaidi led a high-ranking Iraqi delegation during his first official visit to Washington since taking office in May. Iraqi officials stated that the visit addressed issues related to trade, investment, technology, transportation, and energy. Baghdad is seeking increased involvement from established U.S. firms in major development projects and also aims for cooperation in healthcare, education, and petroleum products. These meetings are viewed as part of a broader initiative to establish practical economic partnerships between Iraq and the United States.

Energy cooperation was a key element of the agenda. Iraq is seeking investment to boost crude oil production, develop natural gas resources, and upgrade its electricity grid. Recently, the cabinet instructed the ministries of oil, electricity, and communications to prioritize qualified U.S. companies. Additionally, Iraq’s North Oil Company signed a contract with HKN Energy to develop the Himreen oilfield in northern Iraq, covering oil and gas development through technical and commercial negotiations between the company and Iraqi authorities.

Oil and power initiatives dominate bilateral discussions

Electricity cooperation also played a significant role in the talks. Iraq authorized its Electricity Ministry to finalize a broader cooperation agreement with GE Vernova concerning generation and transmission infrastructure. The company already supports several Iraqi power projects, including turbine upgrades and grid enhancements. Previous agreements included maintenance at power plants and measures to increase generation capacity. Baghdad considers electricity supply a top public service priority as demand continues to strain the national grid.

Energy exports and production capacity were also discussed in the economic talks. Iraqi officials indicated that planned energy agreements would facilitate the development of additional export routes and support higher production levels. Iraq mainly exports crude via Gulf shipping routes and relies heavily on petroleum revenues. The government has called for increased connections between Iraqi fields and Mediterranean export markets. Al-Zaidi reiterated Iraq’s commitment to OPEC and emphasized the need for a fair share of production within the group.

U.S. investment grows across Iraq’s energy landscape

Iraq possesses some of the world’s largest proven crude reserves and remains a founding member of OPEC. However, production growth is constrained by infrastructure limitations and the OPEC+ supply framework. Baghdad has expressed its intention to increase capacity while fulfilling international commitments. Companies like HKN Energy, Chevron, and GE Vernova have all participated in Iraqi energy projects or engaged in formal discussions. Chevron has held talks concerning West Qurna 2, one of Iraq’s largest oilfields, and other potential developments.

The Washington meeting also addressed broader economic ties beyond oil and power. Trump and Al-Zaidi explored opportunities in trade, communications, technology, infrastructure, and private investment. Iraqi officials reported that the delegation included senior government representatives responsible for economic and security matters. Neither government published a comprehensive list of signed commercial agreements after the meeting, but their public statements confirmed that energy investment and wider economic cooperation remained central themes of the dialogue.
