The Central Bank of Egypt announced this preliminary figure on September 7. At the close of July, reserves were reported at $56.2939 billion, indicating an increase of approximately $920.6 million during August, or about 1.6%. This latest figure continues a pattern of monthly reserve growth in 2026 and marks Egypt’s official foreign reserves surpassing $57 billion for the first time.

Compared to August 2025, when reserves stood at $49.2507 billion, the August total reflects an increase of $7.9638 billion, or roughly 16.2% annually. Egypt’s net international reserves ended December 2025 at $51.4516 billion. Consequently, reserves have grown by about $5.76 billion, or 11.2%, over the first eight months of 2026. Official monthly data shows a steady rise in reserves since the beginning of the year, with gains continuing through August.
The rate at which reserves accumulated accelerated mid-year. In May, net international reserves reached $53.1342 billion before climbing to $55.0723 billion in June. The reserves then increased to $56.2939 billion in July and reached $57.2145 billion in August. The June rise of approximately $1.94 billion was from May, while July added another $1.22 billion, and August contributed about $920.6 million. These three months together boosted Egypt’s international reserves by over $4 billion.
Foreign currency inflows remain high
Remittances from Egyptians working abroad achieved record levels during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt reported remittance inflows of approximately $47.3 billion for that period, representing a 29.6% rise from about $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances totaled around $4.2 billion, which is 15.6% higher than the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025, according to official figures issued in August.
Egypt’s latest available balance of payments data covers the period from July to March of the fiscal year 2025/2026. During these nine months, the overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion, while the capital and financial account registered net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account, however, posted a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures provide the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external financial situation prior to the August update on international reserves.
Reserves hit successive monthly record highs
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have reached several new nominal peaks. Reserves stood at $52.5938 billion in January, rose to $52.7455 billion in February, and increased further to $52.8306 billion in March. April’s figure was $53.0092 billion, with May reaching $53.1342 billion. June saw reserves surpass $55 billion, July over $56 billion, and August broke the $57 billion mark. The August figure remains provisional, consistent with the convention used in the latest monthly reserve reports.
Compared to the same period last year, Egypt’s August reserve level is nearly $8 billion higher. The country has now recorded three consecutive month-end totals above $55 billion. July marked the first time reserves exceeded $56 billion, and August marked the first above $57 billion. From December 2025 to August 2026, reserve holdings have expanded by more than 10%. These August figures establish a new record for Egypt’s net international reserves, continuing the uninterrupted monthly growth seen throughout 2026.
