Oman Experiences Significant Growth in Electricity Output Amid Water Production Drop

    October 12, 2026

MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours through August 2026. During the corresponding months of 2025, the output was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicate growth across multiple governorates. The rise contributed roughly 1,546.5 GWh to the country’s total electricity production in the first eight months of 2026. In August alone, production reached 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate led the surge in electricity output, with a remarkable 204.8% increase from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah saw a growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta experienced an 8.4% rise. Electricity generation in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar’s output also expanded, with a 4.6% rise during the January to August period. The data reveal widespread expansion in most regions covered by the national statistics.

Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah recorded a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity production. Musandam’s output remained stable at 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures highlight notable disparities in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data encompasses electricity output up to the end of August 2026.

Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%

Oman’s net electricity output grew 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This measurement includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again experienced the highest growth, with net production rising by 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw an increase of 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar recorded gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net electricity output increased by approximately 1,592.1 GWh year on year.

Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output stood at 368.0 GWh, with a 0.0% change from the previous year. The governorate-level data generally followed the trend seen in total electricity figures. National net production remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.

    Water output decreases across Oman

Water production in Oman declined by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production reached approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decrease, producing about 128.07 million cubic metres compared to roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% drop, with total water output falling to around 149.90 million cubic metres from about 155.19 million during the same months last year.

Dhofar was the primary exception to the overall decline, with water production reaching about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, up 3.4% from approximately 50.94 million the previous year. The latest utility data thus reveal contrasting national trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below the same period in 2025.
